60 years ago this week, in the March 31, 1958 issue, LIFE featured a story on the World's Fair in Belgium - "GIANT CARNIVAL OF PROGRESS, PLEASURES—AND COMPETITION: BRUSSELS ASKS WORLD TO ITS FAIR." According to LIFE, the fair, which would open on April 17, was the first international exposition since the one in New York in 1939. It was located on the edge of Brussels and spread over 435 acres.
