A newly discovered celestial light phenomenon known as STEVE is seen near the town of Whitman, Nebraska on the evening of May 26, 2017.
STEVE is short for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, and scientists now know it's a celestial phenomenon related to auroras, also known as the northern and southern lights. It appears as a thin purple arc in the sky. The bright, vertical purple column shown here seemed to stay suspended above the northwest horizon for the better part of an hour. During a portion of this time, an incredible aurora display was also occurring overhead, with distinct vertical columns rapidly shifting from west to east. The aurora can be seen in green on the right side of the photo.
Both STEVE and the aurora are caused by charged particles from the Sun interacting with Earth's magnetic field. STEVE appears at the same time as some auroras, but much closer to the equator. STEVE is a visual clue that something in Earth's dynamic magnetic field is connecting these regions. That's what scientists hope to understand by studying this new dancing light display.
