Since the early settlements, Bulls Island has been the scene of much historical activity. Bulls Bay and the creeks behind Bulls Island were reputed hideouts for pirates plundering ships along the coast. Over 240 years, 36 parties claimed ownership of Bulls Island. Today, it is the largest barrier island found within the #CapeRomain National #WildlifeRefuge in #SouthCarolina. The most photographed part of the refuge, Boneyard Beach on Bulls Island is known for its fallen and sun-bleached oaks and cedars that create an eerie beauty alongside the gentle surf and spectacular sunrises.
