It’s said that “We all know that history is written by the victors.” The Patriarchal system has made sure its heroes have been prominently memorialised in pages of newspapers, history books, and walls of museums. In the early 1990s, media executive, producer and curator @patmitchellmedia persuaded CNN’s Ted Turner (having been declined from all 3 major US TV networks) to green light a six-hour series, A Century of Women — women’s history from 1900-1992, which was broadcast on TBS in 1994 +many countries around the world. Engaging the power of media to raise awareness of women's stories, accomplishments and challenges is integral to Pat’s vision believing that ”we can’t be what we can’t see”. The deaths of authors of enduring literary works (inc those of the African diaspora) all passed unremarked by male, white editors in charge of obits at the time, and that dominance hasn’t abated in the 21st century. In the past two years, the ratio of obituaries about men and women was still 5-1. There is no museum dedicated to the history of women in the U.S. “A person with no stories has no history nor future," was one of Pat Mitchell’s grandmother’s favorite sayings. “That’s why I’m committed to getting women’s stories front and center at every opportunity, to promote women’s stories across all media, the goal being a national women’s museum. We can’t all write a movie or play or create art but we can share our own stories and tell the stories of other women so that no woman’s story gets unreported, deaths go unrecorded, or accomplishments assigned to someone else.” “Work in Progress” the mural seen here is a collaboration by Jann Haworth, her daughter, artist Liberty Blake, and photographer Lynn Blodgett, presented in a series of panels featuring more than 250 women who helped shape the world through contributions in the arts, sciences and social justice. “ Last year, Pat was appointed by Nancy Pelosi to a bi-partisan congressional commission to study the feasibility of a national woman’s museum that was presented to Congress. “I challenge us all to discover a woman’s story by sharing it with others.”
