I grew up on a family-owned dairy farm facing rising operating costs, unpredictable milk prices, and labor issues. A neighboring farm looked at technological solutions using robots to reduce labor and increase the comfort of the herd. Each cow decides when she wants to be milked and enters a robotic milking station of her choice wearing a transponder. This allows a computer to ID her name and displays everything about her milk production, health, activity (in steps per day) and comfort (measured by cud chewing). She eats her grain while she is washed and milked and then she exits to wander about, feed on a balanced diet of silage, haylage and soybeans and rest on a water-filled mattress. Minimum human interaction leaves more decision-making to the cow, creating a less stressful environment. The result is a more contented herd, increased milk production and preservation of a family farm for the next generation. -
