And to think when we first brought Roo home he hid from us for days. He cried all hours of the night (LOUDLY). Day by day he got a little more comfortable and now he’s a total lap cat! He was terrified of being in a cage and is still terrified of carriers.
Sometimes cats just need time to adjust to new surroundings and people. If you’ve recently adopted or taken in a new kitty please give them space and let them come to you on THEIR terms.
Too often rescues and shelters encounter people returning adult cats within 48 hours of adoption because they think they’re not friendly. When you adopt a cat, especially an adult, you have to be prepared to have patience. Once you earn their trust you’ll likely be inseparable but sometimes it takes time.
Also, don’t judge a cat (or dog) by their disposition in a cage because it could just be cage fright. Once in an open roam room Rescue, Roo thrived and people could see more than an emotionally distraught shut down cat.
You never know what truly lies beneath the fear, sadness, and confusion of adult cats who have been abandoned.
