He expresses his affection for the baby by kissing her and stroking her head. Female chimps with infants tend to be protective and guarded around males, but Mike’s attitude was so affectionate that he was tolerated by Nickel—she trusted him enough to fall asleep. Within chimp families relationships between individuals are as unique as they are in human families.
