It never lasts. Half of these dishes are dirty again and piled haphazardly in the sink. I wiped out the sink with the paper towels and honeycrisp apple scented cleaner I bought yesterday, the scent at the request of my daughter, the one who, as I write this, is playing in the Arizona sunshine with the puppy, a rare bit. She's mostly frustrated with the wiggles and jumps and energy of our young lab, which is funny, because she herself is wiggly and energetic too. Her laughter is so fierce and thorough and wide, it's as if it's echoing off the mountain range just a mile south, but no. It's just that lovely and rich. I am writing in short bursts here and now, yet I'm writing. The interruptions are constant, especially in two-hundred unfinished square feet. If it's not a request for a snack, it's a bumbling dog knocking over a glass of water, or worse yet, the table, and that doesn't even begin to cover my own shit, how I must clean meticulously in order to free my mind to write, and once I sit down at the keys, that mind takes off to dark and insecure places. Yet still, I manage to write, to write much about nothings-and-somethings, the running narrative makes it to the page, and the dishes get done too, and the home gets built and the business runs and the designs are done and our daughter's laughter still rings out.
