Happy Birthday to the Godmother of Punk, Nina Hagen.⠀

If you want to know what a bona-fide Punk looks like- look to Nina. Onstage and off, she has fiercely and fearlessly fought for those who need it and championed those without a voice. Throughout the last six decades, she always remained true to herself. She played a crucial role in Punk- especially for women in music- and is a renowned household name.. everywhere except the UK.⠀

Nina was born in a tumultuous East Berlin in the 1950's, to a famous actress and screenwriter. Then in 1966 her anarchic tendencies began to blossom, when her mother married notorious anti-establishmentarian Wolf Biermann. ⠀
From there a decade later, she made the journey to London in 1976, and soon enough burst into the Punk scene, making friends with the likes of the Slits and the Sex Pistols. After a year she took all of the ska and punk inspiration back with her to Kreuzberg-where she formed The Nina Hagen Band. Short-lived though it was, her solo career saw her reaching heights of international fame, and has released more than 500 songs in her lifetime. Actress and activist, opera performer and Punk queen, mother and muse.⠀

Recognisably theatrical, her vocals are a aural-collage of squeals, squeaks, snorts and wails. Heavily operatic, having been classically trained in opera since she was a child, her music is powerful, albeit strange.⠀

Her Bowie-like shapeshifting saw her construct seminal identities and styles- her huge eyeliner and day-glo colour coordinating remains iconic. French fashion bad boy Jean Paul Gaultier loved her. She endured and evolved, going from hell-raising Punk giving instructions on masturbation on national TV; to UFO and alien fanatic; to a doting, spiritual maternal figure. All without losing sight of who she was.⠀
