Perhaps the greatest thrill for me as a photographer is being able to see places in a way that nobody has ever experienced before, like the #EmptyQuarter of #SaudiArabia. It’s the world’s largest sea of sand, the size of France, Belgium, and Holland combined, without a road nor permanent point of water. It’s arguably the hottest place on earth, and an exquisite hyper-arid wilderness.
This photo is from my first trip out into “the sands” in 2001. We had three 4x4 cars: one for people, one for our two motorized paragliders, and one for drums of fuel plus water and firewood. These star dunes were in a remote part of the #RubAlKhali near the border of Oman. Due to fuel and water limitations, we had only three days out in the sands, and so I flew every morning and afternoon. With the strong winds, the cars had a hard time keeping up with my paraglider.
