Ghadames, Libya was once an important #oasis stop for #camel caravans crossing the #Sahara. The underground nature of the city keeps it significantly cooler than outside, and most inhabitants would sleep on their roofs in hot summer months. The town was declared a #UNESCOWorldHeritage site during Gaddafi’s regime, and has been carefully maintained in its original state. It took a lot of negotiating with local militias to get permission to fly my paraglider here, but the view from above was spectacular. To see inside the underground city, follow @geosteinmetz
