Happy Birthday Ian Brown⠀ ⠀ The Stone Roses were formed in 1983 Manchester- when Underground was in it's second year selling shoes to the subcultures of the city. At this Manchester was a melting pot of culture and identities after the demise of Punk and Post Punk, both of which flourished in the Northern city. It was the perfect breeding ground for likeminded people to cyclically interchange between various bands until the ones that worked, rose to the top. Those that did, pioneered what we know as 'Madchester'- and the Stone Roses assuredly were at the forefront of this.⠀ ⠀ With an early interest in punk bands like The Clash and Sex Pistols, he also put on a Northern Soul clubnight- and this sweeping love for music can be heard in the distinctive sound of the Stone Roses. Ian played in a number of bands before starting the one he is most known for with John Squire, and Simon Wolstencroft for a short time. It's said that during the band's infancy, he even took three weeks of singing lessons to bring his vocals up to scratch. His vocals are distinctively light- which paired with a immense charisma and keen handling of a tambourine left him a formidable frontman.⠀ ⠀ So in honour of this Manchester legend's birthday- we advise you all to stick on their debut album- a record bursting at the seams with atmosphere, dance beats and funk- and try not to dance your way through the day.⠀ ⠀ Photo is by Kevin Cummin's in his brilliant monochromatic book 'Manchester: Looking for Light in Pouring Rain'.
