MEETING THE DAMNED.⠀ 'One of the best things about working with Underground is getting to meet your idols. If you are anything like me, as a teenager there was always a lot of talk of ‘growing out of’ whatever it is that I am. We have all been assured at some point that the black clothes, hair dye, nail polish and all-round macabre obsessions are just part of a phase. Discovering @eternally_damned as a teenager signifies the moment I realised I was right- it’s not a phase. Weird can run down you like a stick of rock and you can live life authentically. Because of this, and the unfaltering stream of exhilarating music they’ve delivered for more than 40 years, I’ve always felt that I have had a lot to thank them for. I was fortuitous enough to see them play live on Friday night at Koko, and for me the evening was soaked in sentiment- it felt like coming home to a family clad in safety pins and leather.⠀ ⠀ Since their formation in 1976- #TheDamned have arguably done more for the overall face of subculture and British music than many of their Punk peers. More than just being the first Punk band to record, tour, break up and make up- they were faster, technically great and had a sense of humour. Yet what distinguished them chiefly from their crude counterparts was their overarching love of music and love of playing music. Where other Punk bands despised all music that came before, and sought to resentfully rip it apart in an act of revolution- The Damned used their scoping love of music to put together a sound that was an antidote to the zeitgeist, for people to enjoy. Themes are optimistic and having fun is naturally at centre of what they do. Criminally, it was their absolute Punk spirit, their pursuit to remain independent, and to evolve yet remain themselves that saw them not being recognised by the music press for what they are.⠀ ⠀ By the time the Black Album was released, the febrile Punk scene was nothing more than smouldering ashes. Whilst many bands were lost at best- Dave’s voice had dropped an octave, Captain Sensible was a national treasure with a newfound propensity for songwriting, and the band had revealed another facet. ⠀ CONTINUED IN COMMENTS
