La culotte Petit Bateau fait partie des «Grands Vêtements
» du monde moderne. Presque à son insu.
Ce modèle prend la relève d’un traditionnel sous-vêtement
qui a le tort d’être trop long pour l’époque qui commence.
On s’en doutait vaguement. D’un coup de ciseaux,
Étienne Valton en fait une évidence. La nouvelle venue est
une «culotte sans jambes».Dès 1913, Étienne Valton avait utilisé sur quelques «culottes
pour enfants» cette appellation «Petit Bateau», empruntée
à la célèbre comptine que son épouse Germaine
chantonnait à leurs bambins. La guerre avait étouffé
l’histoire en germe. Mais en 1918 elle resurgit et, avec elle,
une alliance qui fera mouche. D’un côté, une formule
technique synonyme de liberté, de confort et de qualité.
De l’autre, une formule magique empreinte de poésie, de
fraîcheur et d’esprit d’enfance. // The Petit Bateau panty is one of the “Great Garments” of
the modern world, yet it goes almost unnoticed. This model replaced a traditional undergarment, which
had the disadvantage of being too long for the changing
times. It certainly seemed so… and with one snip of the
scissors, Étienne Valton made it obvious. The newcomer
was a “panty without legs”. Starting in 1913, Étienne Valton used the name “Petit
Bateau” on some “children’s panties”, borrowing from the
popular lullaby that his wife Germaine sang to their
toddlers. The war temporarily nipped that story in the
bud. But in 1918 it reappeared and, with it, an alliance
that was right on target. On one hand, a technical formula
that assured freedom, comfort and quality. Of the other, a
magical formula imbued with the poetry, freshness and
spirit of childhood.
