Sadhana Singh was 13 when she and her parents moved to the U.S. from Guyana. They flew to New York on tourist visas, which they planned to overstay. From there, they took a bus to Georgia to meet an uncle. “We were all dressed in really nice clothes on our way to the airport because in Guyana, at the time, you dressed up to travel,” Sadhana recalled. “I was wearing this colorful striped shirt with overalls.” The 700,000 immigrants with #DACA — or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — took many paths to the U.S. But they share one thing: a journey that has come to define the rest of their lives. Sadhana, who’s now 31, remembers crying on the bus ride to Georgia. “I was like, ‘What is this place? It just brought me down.’” As the Senate prepares to negotiate the fate of the Dreamers, a group of them recalled the pivotal experience that took place before they could understand its significance.
