As a consequence of its isolation, the island is home to a high number of endemic species; up to a third of its plant life is endemic. It has been described as "the most alien-looking place on Earth”. The Dragon Blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari) has a unique and strange appearance, with an "upturned, densely packed crown". This evergreen species is named after its dark red resin, which is known as "dragon's blood". The trees have long been harvested for their resin, highly prized in the ancient world and still used today. Socotrans use it ornamentally as well as for dying wool, as a glue, and a breath freshener. Because of the belief that it is the blood of the dragon it is also used in ritual magic and alchemy. Human activities have greatly reduced the tree's population through overgrazing, and feeding the flowers and fruits to livestock. One of the species' greatest threats is the gradual dessication of the archipelago.
