Photo by @davidalanharvey // Gambia storytellers. African griots with the stringed kora and by song tell of history, entertain, and act as reporters of the day. Yes using music as succinct language. Griots inherit their art from their fathers. Passed down for generations. Slaves by the thousands were taken to Bahia, Brazil from right here where the Gambia River flows to the sea. Look at the map and you can see how close West Africa is to Brazil. Griots were aboard these slave ships. So from the sugar cane plantations in Bahia the griots kept their role. Via colonialism slavery then moved up through the Caribbean and the Americas. Yet an enslaved culture was not silenced. The griots were the wellspring of gospel, blues, jazz, reggae ,rock n roll and rap. Basically the heartbeat of American music. I loved working many weeks in Senegal and Gambia then later months in Bahia,Brazil. Am I an academic or historical expert ? No. Yet I’ve followed this trail for years all the way from right here in Gambia to the studio of Snoop Dog in Hollywood. The camera takes you places as no other means. The slave trade is a trail of blood, sweat and tears yet also an amazing picture of oppression overcome by art by song by the beat. Art outlasts everything. ?
