The #MuseumsDiscoveryCentre is a treasure trove of objects, including a collection which illustrates how pearl shell was made into pearl buttons in Sydney in the 1930s, including this pearl shell marked with button discs.

Before being replaced by plastics post-WWII, pearl shell buttons were valued for their durability. Pearl shell was also used for cutlery, hair combs, jewellery, decorative objects and inlay for furniture.
