As I think about how today would've marked my dear brother Eddie Barclay's 97th birthday, I can't help but think back to all of the albums we did together when I was living in Paris, France (my second home!). Billy Eckstine was on Eddie & Nicole Barclay's label, Barclay Records (their $44 million dollar record company that they built from nothing!), & he referred me to them when Nicole was looking for an arranger to come write with Barclay in Paris. I went to work for them for 3 months (they even put me up in their villa in Cannes) & I wound up staying for almost 5 years! During that time, I became the Musical Director for Barclay Records & I did over 10 albums with Eddie. I composed/arranged this album, "Twilight Time," & recorded it with Eddie & his orchestra in 1958. It has that easy going Parisian feel that I love...almost as if you were walking down the streets in the South of France during the wee hours of the night. Eddie was one of my best friends & I've had the experience of being the best man at 5 of his weddings!! He taught me everything there was to know about wine, food, & dining. And man...he gave fabulous dinners. Well, they weren't really dinners, they were events...fabulous 20 course affairs where he always planned something crazy. Sometimes he'd serve the dinner courses backwards: coffee, dessert, wine, main course, salad, appetizer, bread, then an aperitif. It was pure decadence at its finest...as only the French know how to do! I was also in Paris at Eddie's when we got a call from the office of Princess Grace of Monaco. They told Eddie, "Frank Sinatra is coming here to sing for the premiere of his movie 'Kings Go Forth' & he wants you & Quincy to bring an orchestra to the Sporting Club in Monaco." We agreed immediately, caught the train with 55 musicians from Eddie's stable, & headed south to play with Sinatra! Those types of memories can never be replaced or forgotten!! Eddie, you might not be here physically, but your spiritual energy sure lives on through your music! Love & miss you my brother. Happy Birthday!
