We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jack Whitten, who was born in Bessemer, Alabama in 1939. Wedded to abstract painting, his practice took a decisive turn in the mid-1970s, when he pioneered new methods of paint application that involved the use squeegees, rakes, saw blades, and Afro picks. “Odyssey: Jack Whitten Sculpture, 1963-2016,” the first exhibition dedicated to the artist’s sculptures, will open at The Baltimore Museum of Art this April and will travel to The Met Breuer this coming fall (on view September 6—December 2, 2018).
