Step sisters is now out on @Netflix !!! ?????? # I appreciate folks sharing their thoughts about the messages portrayed in it, and I wanted to share some of why I came on board with it. I hope that in seeing the film, people who have doubts may feel better about it as well. # I have the utmost respect for the whole creative team behind it and it’s incredibly important for me to support artists of color and their creative visions. A big part of my signing onto the project was to have the honor of working with Lena Waithe, whose body of work speaks for itself. Lena’s work has sparked very important conversations and I jumped at the opportunity to work on a project with her. # As I continue to grow in using my voice toward my values I look for different entry points with which to engage people in courageous conversations about what both unites and divides us. With a background in comedy I often feel like comedy has a role to play in uniting us while encouraging us to show up for the tougher conversations and issues in our society. # My character in the film is well-educated on the intellectual arguments of social justice, but is also a highly problematic in many ways, like by being a HUGE whitesplainer. I was drawn to the role in large part because of the character’s arc of going from making massive mistakes to then taking more accountability for the ways in which he has messed up (while still having a LOT of work to do). It’s been my hope that the character can serve as a teaching tool of how NOT to show up as a white man, and how even very well-intentioned white people often do things that are detrimental, even in the pursuit of racial justice. The process of becoming a better ally is a lifelong journey, and I hope that this character models the need for that perspective. # I hope that you all will stick with me on this journey of discovery, growth, and discernment, all toward what’s most important here….that all people have the opportunity to reach their highest ideals and best selves. Much love. ❤️❤️❤️
