A juvenile #gentoo #penguin drinking from a rain puddle on the Antarctica peninsula. In recent decades the peninsula has warmed significantly, turning times of snow to a season of rain, only increasing the melt in a place where ice is receding rapidly. Millions upon millions of animals in #Antarctica depend on this ice and colder temperatures. The primary food source for nearly every mammal here is krill, a small shrimp that feeds on plankton and algae which grows on ice. Krill is heavily fished in the waters of Antarctica as well, doubling the pressure on this organism. By 2050 It’s estimated that there will be 9.7 billion people on the planet, we need to figure out a balance of how we are affecting our environment, how sustainably we farm the seas and the lands, it’s all unbelievably connected.
