I wanted to take a second to thank my opponent, Chelsea Lagrasse for this fun fight. Beyond that, I wanted to thank her for teaching me to be a better person. Our first amateur fight ended in a disqualification loss for myself. I was pissed about the outcome because I didn’t think it was fair for the fight to end that way and I decided to hop on Facebook and call Chelsea out for a rematch and said some not nice things in an attempt to get under her skin and get her to take the fight with me. When I first posted it, I won’t lie—it felt good. I felt like I got my little digs into her. I see other fighters do it all the time so I thought I’d take my go at talking shit on social media. But people started commenting and chiming in and it began to escalate into something bigger than I expected. I felt like a bully. I felt gross. I deleted the post. This was not why I fell in love with martial arts. Fast forward to a few months ago. My rematch with Chelsea was finally happening! It was a long shot, but I decided to message Chelsea before the fight and apologize for my previous actions on social media. I wasn’t sure if she’d even respond—but to my surprise, not only did she reply but she very graciously accepted my apology. I was so in awe of her character to be able to put that in the past and be so kind. She did me such a huge favor in doing so and I was able to train and focus on my fight camp without this feeling gnawing away at my conscience. She gave me hell in the ring but beyond all that, she showed me mercy, forgiveness and amazing sportsmanship. Chelsea Lagrasse, you have a forever fan in me—inside and outside of the ring. Thank you for this experience. You’ve taught me to be a better person and that’s more important than anything that could have happened in that ring. ❤️
