The hook is used to snag and lift heavy loads of produce and product from carts to shoulders so that it can be carried to shops etc. Nattamis are the literal and metaphorical backbone of the market culture.  Most find their way into the line of work because of a lack of education and an inability to be employed elsewhere. The work is intensely physical. Due to the rising cost of living, many Nattami are finding it increasingly difficult to survive on this work alone.  The opportunity for employment elsewhere is scarce to non-existent leaving the much needed work force in an ever more precarious catch-22: look to another industry for an elusive if not impossible way out, or continue to scrape by on thinner and thinner margins as the cost of living creeps higher.  A good return yields roughly 800 rupees/day or just over $5 USD.
