Have you ever heard of a solar storm chaser? That’s @TEDFellow Miho Janvier's job title. Well, technically she’s a solar physicist, but her position allows her to hunt down and research solar storms (which are giant clouds of particles that escape from the sun, like the one pictured above). Turns out, these storms can have a pretty major effect on our society here on Earth. They can cut off satellite telecommunications, disrupt GPS systems, prevent you from using your cell phone, and so much more.
