Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Gannet pair – This is another image from a recently re-found set of images that I’d previously, and very clumsily processed. Gannets are the UK’s largest seabird and their exquisite beauty and sleek lines are a sight to behold but don’t let the apparent grace and serenity of this image deceive you. The colonies in which these birds live can be an assault on the senses, a cacophony of sound and a maelstrom of activity but what most people seem to recall, and recoil at, is the smell. Strangely enough the smell of their guano has never bothered me, usually because I am always so thrilled to be again in the presence of their company but I have shared the experience with enough people to know that the smell is at least memorable, at most overwhelming. When working in these cluttered and busy environments it is of course important that one’s images reflect honestly the circumstances under which they live but equally I find myself drawn to images such as these. Images that belie the truth of what the experience was really like, the antithesis of what a gannet colony is and can be. When these two gannets took up residence on a exposed and elevated rock, itself made white by the covering of bird faeces, it gave me the ideal opportunity to capture images that were uncomplicated, uncluttered and free from the usual chaos. In these moments there is also a feeling of calm that one can elicit in an image, especially when the birds strike such elegant and serene poses, even if just out of shot there is an incandescent neighbour waiting for an opportunity to launch another pecking assault. With the distant featureless sky containing nothing of note I was free to select an aperture that gave me enough depth of field to render both birds sharply and then it was simply a case of wait and hope.
