Today, the empress of Punk Patti Smith turns 71. Before Patti, music, art and poetry were largely considered separate entities, but her beautiful fusion of all three gives voice to people in a far more powerful, emotional way. Punk could have easily been remembered as two years of messy, masculine rage- but through her work, Punk has proven to be an un-gendered spirit accessible to all for the decades to come. Her presence on the New York Punk scene in the 70's was uniquely defiant to the already defiant Punk of the Ramones and Richard Hell. Fiercely intellectual and with a keen mastery of words, she fuses poetry and punk to take a stand against the injustices she feels in the world. Her shamanic performances can leave you shivering, her words are mantras to live by and fight for. Never appeasing the demands of commercial success or expectations of outdated gender roles, she remains true to herself and her belief system. A true artisan, revolutionary and inspiration to all.
