Recy Taylor passed away yesterday at the age of 97. Her un-prosecuted rape case in 1944 was an early catalyst for the civil rights movement. Ms. Taylor was kidnapped and gang raped by six white men in 1944, sadly one of many rapes of black women at the hands of white men during the Jim Crow era. With the help of the @naacp and #RosaParks, Recy fought to have her case tried twice. Her case never went to trial. Her rapists were never prosecuted, even after one of them confessed. In 2011, nearly 67 years later, Alabama legislature issued an apology to Taylor "for its failure to prosecute her attackers."
