“We had a nice life, a simple life, a comfortable life,” Fatima al-Ewy said of her family’s former life in Homs, in western Syria. The unrest after the Arab Spring changed all that. Fatima, 25, and her future husband, Amer al-Daher, each fled with their families to north Lebanon. They married there in 2013 and soon had a daughter, Haneen, now 3. There the family lived on the second floor of an unfinished building, where they spent hours everyday without electricity. Then in March, a fire stole more from them than they had already lost. But the family recently received a reprieve. They were resettled last week in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Amer told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ he was looking forward to having legal residency and the opportunity to work and put Haneen in school. “No matter what,” Fatima said, “it’s going to be better than this.” @diego.ibarra.sanchez took this photo of Haneen with her father, Amer al-Daher, in Halba, Lebanon. | @theirc, one of the 8 organizations supported by the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Neediest Cases Fund, gave the family money so that they could pay back a loan in full.
