A harp seal pups rests on the ice in Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence. At about 2 weeks old and now weaned from their moms, these pups are known as ‘fat whitecoats’ begin life on their own in this frozen wilderness.
Harp seals depend on pack ice to survive. During the first two weeks of their lives, the pups need solid ice from which to nurse from their moms and build the layer of fat necessary for swimming in the polar waters. If the ice is thin they often fall into the icy sea and die. Over the last decade, the sea ice has been in decline, leaving the future uncertain for this species.
