Who better to model the Untypical Girls book by Sam Knee than the inimitable @novatwinsmusic? Thanks to @millrad for the photo. This is another great book that came out this October. It’s 1977 and Sex Pistols have just pissed off about every single powerful musical figurehead, Pink Floyd adorned the skyline over Battersea with a forty-foot inflatable pig and Rod Stewart really didn’t want to talk about it. Men ruled the musical school and it’s inevitably stayed that way ever since. However, during the same year a radicalisation of the music scene started.
#TheSlits presented themselves as the un-Typical Girls, #SiouxsieandtheBanshees had made their So It Goes debut and #theRaincoats had transformed into an all-female line-up. A revolution had officially begun: out of the punk and post-punk scenes, energised by the same fury as their male counterparts, women were defiantly making their mark in music.
#SamKnee, in his book #UntypicalGirls, charts the journey of ferocious feminism in music from its origins in punk to its apex in the ‘90s with the #RiotGrrrl movement.
