A bit from the filmmakers about the amazing technology behind the video:
We tend to stay in our loops in life, replaying different versions of the same scenario over and over. We create the illusion of moving forward without actually advancing. In death, can we break those patterns? Or are we doomed to keep repeating eternally?

The new video for When You Die, the second single off MGMT’s upcoming album Little Dark Age, utilizes an amalgamation of AI Style Transfer technology techniques, making use of artificial neural networks to impose the stylistic qualities of an image onto video footage. The end result is an eerily familiar, dreamlike interpretation. The effect can appear beautiful at some times and horrific at others.

Burakoff and Jamie Dutcher (collectively KingDrippa) developed their own software, nicknamed Glooby, to harness the power of Style Transfer for the production pipeline. Numerous iterations of the software were made to reduce render times and increase frame size. When render times still weren’t fast enough, they built a custom computer with multiple graphics cards to handle the workload, which resulted in render times of 3 minutes per frame in close to full HD.
