#SpeakingInDance | In “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker,” the Prince’s star moment comes when he tells the story — not with words but with pantomime — of his adventures with Marie in the battle with the mice. The pantomime comes from a script handed down from #Balanchine, who danced the part as a boy in St. Petersburg. Here, the Prince sees a mouse “with my 2 eyes” — he wiggles his fingers in front of his chin — and then he sees another mouse, and asks himself, with outstretched arms, “What should I do?” He calls his soldiers to fight. The script may sound clunky, but it helps the dancer perform the movements correctly and with the right musicality: “Over there came the king of the mice. He asked me to fight and I accepted. He me pushed back. She shoe threw. King mouse turned and I killed. Victory. She and me saved the whole land, and I have told you everything.” Tenzin Niles, 10, one of 2 @sab_nyc students dancing the role at @nycballet, always says the words in his head when he performs. “The pantomime is something special,” he told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “It’s like a whole new kind of ballet.” @jaibirdn took this #video for our weekly series, #SpeakingInDance.
