Spinning gold: ‘Penelope’ by John Roddam Spencer Stanhope forms part of our ‘Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite and British Impressionist Art’ sale on 14 December. The painting depicts in exquisite detail the story of Penelope from Homer’s famous epic poem ‘The Odyssey’. For millennia her tale has represented marital fidelity, and she was a heroine who many Pre-Raphaelites chose to represent: not just for her famed morality, but also because of her associations with needlework and embroidery.
