Welcome to Russia’s coldest and most polluted industrial city: Norilsk. This is a place of brutal extremes. Norilsk is 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The only way to get in or out is by plane or by boat. Beyond the city: an endless, mostly uninhabited wilderness. And starting last week, the sun stopped rising in Norilsk. Until January, the city’s 175,000 residents will live in the dark. So why do people live and work here today? The lure of a better life. Some residents are the descendants of former slave laborers who stayed on simply because it was too hard to leave a place so remote. Other people were lured by the promise of steady work in the city’s metallurgical industry, owned by Norilsk Nickel. It’s the world’s largest producer of palladium and a major supplier of nickel, copper and other metals. It’s also one of the world’s biggest producers of pollution. Despite all of this, many #Norilsk residents are fiercely proud of their city. “Norilsk is a unique city, it was put here by force,” said Alexander Kharitonov, who owns a printing house. “It is like a survivor.” Swipe left to see more photos by @sergeyponomarev.
