My first assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック in 2001 was on Atlantic salmon fish farming and I have never taken my finger off the pulse of this incredibly destructive industry. Right now, #bloodwater is being released from farmed salmon processing plants near Campbell River and Tofino, British Columbia which is infected with a virus that threatens wild salmon populations.
80% of farmed Atlantic salmon on Canada’s west coast are infected with Piscine reovirus, which has been linked to a harmful salmon disease.
This aquaculture industry is operating without the consent of local First Nations who are demanding it transition out of the ocean and into land based systems.
When you buy salmon, you vote with your dollars: always buy wild salmon or stop eating salmon all together.
