@natgeo photo by @stevewinterphoto for the Dec. 2017 @natgeo Jaguar story WATCH our Jaguar film with the amazing @bertiegregory on Sunday night Dec 10th @9pm on Nat Geo Wild - premier of Big Cat Week!!!!!!! Throughout my career I have been searching for a cultural connection between local indigenous people and big cats. I found it by speaking with Carlos Castano-Uribe and his wife Cristal Ange Jaramillo of @fundacion_herencia. In 1989 when Carlos was director of Colombia National Parks he created Chiribiquete National Park. One of the wildest places left on the planet and of immense cultural significance that boggle’s the mind and changes our perception of our human history in the Western Hemisphere. Difficulty of access to this place has preserved almost intact ecosystems that house a variety of biological wealth. I was able to visit the park with Carlos, Cristal and the who’s who of Colombian natural history scientists and @bertiegregory. Painted on the walls of the tepuis - (mountains that come out of the jungle floor with steep vertical sides) are ancient paintings done by Jaguar Shamans, thought to be 20,000 years old. Paintings that are 100 meters long up to 10 meters high depicting jaguars. Any animal that has it’s mouth open is a jag - jaguar warriors and shamans and a myriad other species. It is the most incredible place I have seen in my recent explorations - it literally brought me to tears in the helicopter. All art is about emotion - and the paintings and nature itself is artistic perfection. A Huge thank you to Carlos and Cristal for allowing us access in this sacred and magical place. BUT the park is under threat mining and logging — and needs to be protected - as the rainforest has not been explored or studied - and there are the central parts of the tepuis which none but birds or flying insects can leave - so they are unknown species - amazing. Thanks to Julia and everyone at Colombian National Parks for all their assistance. Protect Chiribiquete National Park and all the rainforest, animals and people’s that live within. It is THE unknown jewel of the world’s natural history. @fundacion_herencia @natgeochannel @natgeowild @natgeocreative
