Word on the Water— a 50-foot-long canalboat stuffed to its bulkheads and overflowing onto the towpath with books — has a permanent berth on the #RegentsCanal, around the corner from the @britishlibrary. The store’s prosperity has likely been helped by a book business that has been doing remarkably well in Britain. Sales of physical books increased 8% last year, while e-books continued a significant decline. “Books have been considered on the verge of obsolete and so have canals,” Paddy Screech, one of the store’s owners, said. “But these are things people always liked. The canals survived because of that, and so will books and bookstores.” At the beginning, the business was forced by the berthing laws to move every fortnight. But when the canal trust peppered the store with legal notices, fines and threats, fans protested on social media. Eventually, the authorities gave Word on the Water a permanent berth. @andrew_testa photographed Michel Koch playing jazz on the roof of the bookshop, where poetry slams and readings sometimes attract hundreds.
