Meet Alma Torres, who embraces what millions of other women have struggled to keep secret: She has facial hair. Nearly one in five women live with hirsutism, a condition defined as excessive hair growth in a male pattern, and deal with psychological and emotional distress as a result. Torres shaved regularly for eight years, spending hours in the bathroom to get rid of her 5 o’clock shadow. "It was so bad that I stopped going to school," she says. "I dropped out."
