Following the first wave of interest in plant bulbs – introduced to Europe from all parts of the world via the Netherlands – specially designed glass vases were invented in the 1700s for cultivation of flowers in water, and for forcing bulbs into water bloom. The hourglass-shaped vases, sometimes known as ’hyacinth glasses’ or forcing vases, hold the bulb just above water and allow its root structure to fill the glass. Exposed to warmth and light after a cold period, the bulb is stimulated to form roots, sprout and flower in indoor environments. Link in bio.
