When Bella Pevzner was a teenager, she fled her home in Belarus after the Nazis invaded. Her parents and a sister escaped, but many other relatives, including her grandparents and a younger sister, were slaughtered. Bella and her immediate family found sanctuary in Kazakhstan before settling in Ukraine, where she started working as a bookkeeper. At 50, she immigrated with her husband and her son to the U.S., where she continued to work into her 70s. “I was a workaholic,” Bella said. “What can I tell you?” A heart operation in 2002, though, halted her once irrepressible work ethic. Age has also taken a toll on her health. She has diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension, gout, respiratory illness, thyroid problems and retinal disease. But Bella, who’s now 89, says she expects to continue thriving. Her father lived to be 97, and she’s determined to live until at least 100. @maslovsaslov photographed Bella, who took up painting at 80, in her home in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. “I don’t lose hope,” she said. “I have pictures not finished, so I need to finish.” | The Jewish Association Serving the Aging — a beneficiary agency of @ujafedny, one of the 8 organizations supported by the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #NeediestCasesFund — helped buy Bella special eye drops to treat her retinal disease, as well as a bench for her shower.
