Spent the morning with @christieshandbags for a preview of their latest Sacs and Accessoires sale (due to be held in Paris on Dec 12th) to glean a bit of insight into the handbag auction game
The big three @エルメス @シャネル @ルイ・ヴィトン of course dominate but as international Head of Handbags and Accessories at Christie’s Matthew Rubinger was telling me, the market is shifting towards future collectibles beyond those brands and that more unique colour ways/editions are more in demand
Like the metallic @エルメス Birkin 25 from 2005 in a hand painted bronze chèvre leather
Interestingly quite a few of the bags (particularly the @エルメス) in the sale are brand new - as in what @christieshandbags call Grade 1 untouched and packaged mint condition. Why do sellers part with their brand new merch? They’re serious collectors, who will have hundreds of @エルメス Birkin’s and Kelly’s bought on a regular basis
Moreover most of @christieshandbags buying clientele demand near-perfect condition (even though I personally love the roughed-up patina of a used bag)
Some of the highlights include a Mini Kelly 20 once owned by Elizabeth Taylor, rare because the particular style, the type of courchevel leather and the colour have all been discontinued
There’s an array of 90s era miniaudieres by @judithleiberny and LA designer Kathrine Baumann - the crystal encrusted hamburger is pretty delectable
Evening bags feature heavily in this particular sale, hence why @シャネル specimens like the Bombay matryoshka is also a star piece
Another @シャネル rarity is the LED Boy bag from the “Data” SS17 collection which I never saw up close. What appeared to be a gimmick actually looks far more impressive in person
I was just there to have a curious gander but actually, having flipped through the catalogue, prices aren’t as wildly crazy as the name Christie’s conjures up. Around 25% of the lots will go above and beyond their estimate prices but Rubinger tells me, many also go under. “We set the estimates at just below market level and let the bidders decide where the prices will go.”
