As if being an astronaut weren't enough of a feat, Whitson has also broken a ton of records: The most spacewalks by a female astronaut (10); at 57, the oldest woman in orbit; first female chief of NASA’s Astronaut Office; first woman to command the International Space Station (which she’s done twice). And with her latest mission, which touched down in September, she has set a new record: 665 cumulative days in space—more than any American astronaut, male or female, young or old.

Upon accepting her award, she addressed the "folks in the balcony"—a section of the theater populated by 400 members of the Lower East Side Girls Club, She's The First, and other non-profits benefitting young women—saying, "I grew up a farm girl and dreamed of being an astronaut...And I made it." She told them they could realize their dreams, too.
