Back in 1971, I became the first black musical director & conductor for the Academy Awards, & I remember telling the contractor to include my brother, Hubert Laws. He said in a snide voice, "I'm sorry, but I'm not quite sure I know who this Mr. Hubert Laws is." I said, "He is one of the finest flute players in the world—jazz or classical—& I'll bet he's never heard of you either." ((:0)) Well, I got Hubert & 16 other black musicians in the orchestra & man it was beautiful...Hubert & I have experienced it all together...I'm talking about the ups & the downs, the rejections, the breakthroughs, & most importantly, the joy of making music together. Man, it absolutely made my soul smile to have you on my A&M show at the Hollywood Bowl a few months ago, playing tunes we made back in the 60's/70's...Such beautiful memories!! Let’s keep on boppin' til we drop!!...Happy Birthday!!
