Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto // Red squirrel portrait – OK, so this isn’t the most exciting image of a red squirrel that you’ve ever seen but given that, in terms of photographing them in snowy conditions, I’ve only ever spent one morning these beautiful mammals my squirrel portfolio is a little sparse. Not only that but on this morning the snow was melting quite quickly and so producing clean images such as this, uncluttered by a distracting background, was becoming increasingly difficult. For this reason I was shooting on my 600mm F4 lens, trying to isolate the squirrel whilst trying to move into positions where both the foreground and background were free from distractions. It’s fair to say as well that ideas such as this are a little contrived but in every situation all you can ever do is do your best, work with what you’ve got and try to produce the very best image that the subject and the backdrop allows for. During my 5 weeks up in Scotland with the mountain hares this coming January-February I shall hope to enjoy another morning or two with these mammals but I will be hoping to do that on days where there has been snowfall as it can have such a transformative effect on the resulting images. Most pleasing of course is that the snow acts like a giant reflector, bouncing light up underneath the squirrel and filling any shadows, giving them a wonderfully even tone. If you’ve never photographed in snow then I’d certainly look to change that this coming winter, no matter what the subject, you will be pleasantly surprised by the results.
