Hey Jerry. Thank you for this brave message. It takes a lot of guts for somebody to realize they are headed in the wrong direction, and want to change. I’m not really an “AA” guy so I can’t really speak about the twelve steps. Although I know they do work for a lot of struggling people. I can tell you my path to change. 17 years ago I had just reached a crossroads in life where I needed to decide if I wanted to be a skilled metalworker or I wanted to drink and party with my friends. I could no longer do both. I couldn’t keep having my previous nights drinking spilling over and wrecking my next day of work. I also was pretty aware that god gave me a gift of skilled hands, and if I didn’t take that gift serious? It would be gone. So I went out one last time on my birthday and got shit faced, kicked out of a restaurant and my favorite bar, and then that was it. I just found something better to do. My craft and business flourished. I couldn’t get enough of this new clarity. It is without a doubt very hard sometimes to not have a beer. Like on a summer evening when the sun is setting and hitting you parallel in the eyes a certain way, a beer would make it so much better. Or when things are bad or stressful, a beer would totally cover it all up. But I just breath in really deep a couple times, and remember all the work I have to get done tomorrow. After time you just don’t have a place for it in your life anymore. Lots of better things to do. Good luck man. There is lots of support for you out there, and I presume a ton in the comments on this post. #jessejames
