COLOURED SAPPHIRES - Sapphires come in a range of yellows, pinks and greens as well as the better-known blue variety. We love them for their variety of unique colours and for their durability; they rate a 9 on Moh scale of hardness so make fantastic stones for engagement rings. Sapphires get their various colours from different levels of trace elements present in the ground when they are formed. Pale blues usually have traces of titanium, while greens generally have greater levels of iron and pink colours are caused by the presence of chromium.
