Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - Here glaciologists dig out snow pits in the upper part of the glacier so that the depth and density of any snow that has survived the preceding summer can be accurately measured. This is used to calculate any snow and ice mass added to the glacier over the year. As is typical of recent decades, the mass gained in the upper parts of the glacier is much less than the amount lost by melting in the lower parts over the course of a year.
