Happy birthday to this total badass, without whom I never would've even considered acting. Sure, I grew up on sets and around incredibly inspiring actors, but it wasn't until I watched Sigourney as Ripley that I truly believed there was a place for women who were as tough as they were smart, who didn't need glitter and frills to hold an audience's attention, they could do so in work coveralls and a layer of well-earned sweat. A woman and a character that my 16 year old shaved head and combat boot wearing self could relate to! And the story of how Sigourney fought for the part of Ripley made me love her even more! If you've never read the background behind the original Alien script and its unisex leads, please, go seek it out! The green lit script had Ripley written as a male, and that remained true even when Ridley Scott came on in 1978! There's so much to be learned even today about how Ripley came to be and why she's so important to so many people, myself included. It's why I'd so long sought out the original script with Ripley as Roby, and I finally found one! And a large portion of that importance can be attributed to the birthday girl right here.
