I am heartbroken over the news of the death of Scout Schultz, an #intersex student activist who was shot by police on their campus at Georgia Tech on Saturday night. I'd like to share a statement from @interact_adv, the nonprofit I am working with that advocates human rights for intersex youth:
"InterACT is deeply saddened to hear of the death of Scout Schultz, fellow #intersex community member and activist. Scout's life was cut short as the result of a police shooting on the Georgia Tech campus, where they were on track to finish their engineering degree this December.
This is a time for those who knew Scout to grieve, and for all of us to remember that it is not only medical violence that intersex people face -- and it is not only intersex people who may face violence by authority figures. The Georgia Tech Pride Alliance, which Scout ran before their death, said Scout "always reminded us to think critically about the intersection of identities and how a multitude of factors play into one's experience on Tech's campus and beyond." It is critical that we carry this reminder with us as we move forward with our activism.
